Support AB 1963 to stop Paraquat! #ParaquatAnne Katten (MPH), CRLAF’s Pesticide & Work Health/Safety Specialist, co-wrote an article about why EPA’s claim that the pesticide paraquat is safe is actually false.

Exposure to paraquat has dangerously high health risks, including damage to the kidneys and lungs and severe burning. In fact, ingesting a single teaspoon can be fatal… and there is no antidote. New research also reaffirms that paraquat exposure is linked to increased risk of Parkinson’s Disease.

While this pesticide is banned in 58 countries, the EPA continues to reject extensive evidence of paraquat’s harmful effects. 10 million pounds of the pesticide are still being used in the United States every year on crops like citrus, almonds, artichokes, garlic, pears, strawberries, and grapes. More than 425,000 pounds of paraquat was sprayed in 2021 in California alone, with over 3/4 of the total used in just 8 San Joaquin Valley counties.

The EPA admitted that farmworkers could be harmed by paraquat, but still doubled down and concluded that, “the risks were outweighed by the benefits.”

We promote the use of environmentally safe rodent control by putting Mother Nature to work for you. I started this 15 years ago in Southern California and the subject has grown by leaps and bounds from those days. Continue the battle, well done!
